Chicago’s Uptown in the mid-1970s was a tough neighborhood. Many of the young men worshiped Bruce Lee, a martial arts movie star who died tragically in Hong Kong at the age of 33. He died in 1973, the year I took this shot. During the four years I photographed in Uptown, I took dozens of shots of kids trying to imitate Lee. Notice the similarity to the position of the boy in this pose and with a famous Bruce Lee movie poster of that time.
