This young man was part of a large Hungarian family that I photographed in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood during the mid-1970s on many occasions. He was always eager to have me photograph him in martial arts poses. That’s why I call this “Martial Artist.” I had just finished photographing some other members of his family, when he came out of the bedroom in the background with a bright red scarf tied around his mid-section. A shaft of light was coming in through the door. I adjusted my position and exposure so that it looked like a laser beam was coming from his fingertips. He used the wad of paper dangling from the ceiling to practice his kicks.
