I went to Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood on Christmas Day of 1974, but didn’t find many people on the streets. At 1248 Wilson, however, I found several kids playing outside. Their mother invited me into their apartment to take pictures of her family. It was one of the more memorable Christmases in my life. It gave me a rare glimpse into how a large Hungarian Uptown family lived. There were at least a dozen people who lived in this small three room apartment. The entire apartment was decorated like this, in brightly colored patterns.
