Drunks often slept in Uptown doorways during the 1970s. Periodically the police would make sweeps of the neighborhood. According to some people I interviewed, the police would take them to the South Side, forcing them to walk home. Scenes like this were a wake up call for activists trying to maintain their neighborhood and property values which were also heading south.
