Entertainment in Uptown during the mid-1970s consisted of watching the daily parade of humanity on the streets. I found this woman on Broadway near the Wilson El stop. She described herself to me as a lesbian. She seemed quite lonely. Most gays and lesbians had not “come out” during this era; there was still significant prejudice against them. Note that her puppy was sitting on a blanket but she was not. The poor of Uptown cared for their animals better than themselves in many cases.
