When I took this shot in September of 1974, 4643 North Winthrop was a multistory apartment building. The most striking thing about this shot is the contrast between the smiling resident and her surroundings.  It seemed to me that someone had kicked in her door. It had been repaired with a piece of paneling that was screwed or nailed over the damage. Someone cut a hole out of it that served as a window. To keep intruders out, wire was nailed over the hole. Despite the aesthetics, the resident seemed positive and enthusiastic. Her dog seemed intent on getting at whatever was cooking in the kitchen. Today, Google Maps street view shows that a new brick home sits on this lot.
