In 1976, I took this shot while standing under the El at 945 Dakin Street. Technically, a reader pointed out, this is in Lakeview. However, it served many people in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood. Not much has changed since then. The site today still contains an automotive repair shop. However, their focus seems to have broadened beyond brakes. The antenna is gone from the roof. Rooftop lights illuminate a sign that goes across the entire front of the building. And the sign perpendicular to the building has been removed. If 100,000 people take the red line El past this point every day, almost 1.2 billion people have gone by this shop since I took the photo.
