In 1976, the Organization of the Northeast and the South Andersonville Improvement Association staged a protest against slumlords outside of Harry Truman College which was still under construction at the time. The burned out apartment building in the background was on the west side of Racine, just south of Wilson. Today, it has been replaced by part of the college. Enlargement shows that the boarded up building had burned and been vandalized. Many of the apartment buildings around this one were still occupied at this point in time. Burned and abandoned apartment buildings were common in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood in the mid-1970s.
