When egrets congregate in a rookery and begin mating, aerial duels frequently break out between males. The fights might start on the ground, but quickly escalate with each male trying to gain the upper hand by rising higher while the opponent tries to knock the competition out of the air. They claw at each other with feet and poke at each other with their bills.
