This man told me he lost his leg in Vietnam. After I took his photo, he signed the model release “Duke Ellington.” It made me wonder whether the Vietnam story was a put-on. Duke Ellington, the jazz great, had died in New York a few months before I took this photo. The man could certainly have been named Duke Ellington. There is more than one Bob Rehak in the world. Regardless, he was eager to show the world that he could still stand on his one remaining leg.
