These three great egrets were fighting in the rookery at the Audubon Society’s Smith Oaks Preserve in High Island, Texas. The male in the middle had been fighting with the male on the right over the affections of the female in the background. The female, who had been paired with the male on the right, made her choice. She stabbed the interloper in the back. The interloper decided to flee rather than deal with the back stabber.
