This is Barney the Baker who strangely enough ran Barney’s Bakery on Wilson between Kenmore and Broadway back in the mid-1970s in Chicago’s Uptown Neighborhood. I took this photo on Christmas Eve just before Barney was closing up shop for the holiday. The rush hour was mostly over. Barney hated to see food go to waste. He took some scraps of bread he had left over and was feeding the pigeons in front of his store as people scurried home. Barney always had a smile for people.
