To make a living in Uptown in 1975, a professional had to be versatile. This person appeared to offer legal, accounting, notary, real estate, insurance and psychological counseling. While photographing in Uptown during the mid-1970s, I was constantly struck by the number of homemade signs. From an advertising point of view, they made this person look less than professional. That may have translated into “affordable” in the minds of the poor who were this person’s customers.
