Bissets was a department store on the southeast corner of Wilson and Broadway. According to a relative of the founder, the store closed around 1960. It must then have sat vacant for several years. I took this picture of the building being torn down on 12/27/75. CompassRose.org contains an article and several user comments about the store. People lovingly described the service, the quality of the merchandise, and the pneumatic tubes that carried money from one area to another. I’m sure it was a not-so-Merry Christmas for the Bisset family that year. A check chasing store and parking lot are on that corner today.
