I took this shot at an apartment building on Winthrop in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood in 1976. I saw the baby looking out through two broken windows. As I started to take the shot, his mother or sister (I’m not sure which) stuck her head out the window. She decided that she was going to be the subject of the shot.
Enlargement will show two circular holes in the two windows approximately at eye level with the baby. The building owner did not replace the glass so the tenants simply taped cardboard over the holes. The windows may have been broken, but not the family’s spirit.
