In the mid-1970s, Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood had the busiest fire department in the nation, according to a Chicago fireman who worked there. Scenes like this burned apartment building were extremely common in Uptown during that era. They resulted from aging housing stock, lack of maintenance, arson for profit, and sometimes revenge fires. Abandoned, burned out buildings like this one became magnets for drug addicts, parties and traffickers.
