This man’s stare cut as deep as his knives. In 1974 when I shot this image, he ran a store called the Butcher Block at 1048 West Wilson. He was throwing out the garbage before locking his back door and heading home. He didn’t seem like a very happy guy. Perhaps his store had been broken into one too many times. Note the four locks and the steel plate on the door as well as the ancient linoleum that had worn through to the floorboards.
