This image was taken in Cherokee, on the North Carolina side of Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Images like this were common as you drove through Appalachia in the mid-1970s. In the next twenty years, a rising tide of political awareness would replace the term “Indian” with “Native American.” I noted recently (October, 2013) that the NFL Washington Redskins are in the middle of a controversy about whether the team name constitutes a racial slur.
