I found this old man outside the Salvation Army soup kitchen at 1028 West Wilson (at Kenmore) on Christmas Eve in 1974. He was waiting in the cold to get some food. As I photographed him, he reached up to pull his hat down over his ears, revealing a very worn shirt. The man was very alert and a community activist. He tried to talk me into voiting for Jose Cha Cha Jimanez for City Council. I told him that I couldn’t vote for Jose because I didn’t live in his district. Jimanez tapped into many neighborhood sentiments. He nearly beat the Daley-backed candiate in the aldermanin election.
