In the late 1960s, a drug culture started to take root in America. By the early 1970s, it had thoroughly infiltrated Uptown. I photographed this man on Christmas Eve of 1974. He was out with his girlfriend who described herself to me as an addict. They were on a Christmas high. I talked to him for several minutes while she went into the Walgreens on the corner of Wilson and Broadway to do some Christmas shopping. When she came out, they both put money in the Salvation Army kettle and walked into the night. I never saw them again. He never told me how he got the cut on his lip.
