These kids were couch riders, not couch potatoes. I found them in a vacant lot playing on an abandoned couch. The game was to try to make the couch balance on its edge as long as they could before it fell forward or backward. This was not easy with so many many kids. One would lean forward while the other leaned back. Every time the couch fell to the ground, they erupted in bursts of laughter. It never ceases to amaze me how kids can find fun in everything from trash can lids to cardboard boxes. This was taken in 1974, years before the first video games were invented. One of the people in the photograph emailed me to say, “we could find fun in anything.”
