This young girl seemed rather coy when I photographed her. I couldn’t tell whether her shyness was genuine or a pretense. She was with a group of other young girls and she certainly wasn’t shy with them. They all appeared to be about 10 or 11 years old … that awkward transitional age when kids are too old to identify with children and too young to be accepted as teenagers. In Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood, though, kids grew up quickly. They saw situations and people on the streets that kids in the suburbs only saw on TV.
