Back in the mid-1970s, the mighty American economy seemed to skid to a halt at the corner of Wilson and Sheridan. I took this picture just a few months after the OPEC oil embargo in October of 1973. As Americans wondered how deep the recession would cut, the church’s sign trumpted “The cure for fear is faith in Jesus.” This picture also shows what the block on the north side of Wilson used to look like. A block of old office buildings and street level shops have now been replaced by a parking lot and a McDonald’s.
