In 1974, I photographed this currency exchange near the “L” on Lawrence. Back then, Uptown had currency exchanges on every block. Illinois currency exchanges were not like the currency exchanges found in international airports that exchange money in one country’s currency for another’s. Currency exchanges provided a variety of services from check cashing to money orders, to license renewals, notary, utility bill paying and more.
