In 1974, I found these three kids playing in an empty Uptown lot, digging holes in the dirt. The two on the right looked like they might be brothers. The one on the left was the odd man out. The boy wearing the T-shirt that says “Eat Hamburgers” would alternately tease him and pretend to be a friend. It felt sorry for the boy on the left. I wanted to intervene, but realized that the kid in the middle was simply putting on a show for the camera. So I left and they went back to digging holes in the dirt.
