I took this shot with Nikon’s new D5 and the 800mm Nikkor at the Audubon Society’s Smith Oaks Rookery in High Island, Texas. The camera focuses very quickly. I notice that on the vast majority of the shots I took last week, the birds seem to be staring directly at me as they pass by. I discovered this thanks to the incredible capabilities of the new camera, but also noted that I was dressed differently from other photographers. Most wore camo or khaki; I wore a bright red shirt. As a result, I stood out from the crowd of other photographers and birdwatchers. It made the birds focus on me and resulted in much more intimate photos.
