I found this female rose breasted grosbeak sitting on a branch gorging herself about 10 feet away from her mate at the Audubon Society’s Smith Oaks Rookery in High Island, Texas. They had just migrated across the Gulf of Mexico and were famished after the two to three day flight. Grosbeaks usually look pudgy, but these two clearly had burned off some body fat. They were indifferent to the crowd gathered around them; they were so famished that they just ate and ate. Taken with a Nikon D4 and 800mm Nikkor with a 1.2x teleconverter on 4/17/14.
