I took this shot at the corner of Wilson and Broadway on 4/26/75. Engine 83 came around the corner first with sirens blaring. Danny Ahlfeld of the Chicago Fire Department tells me that Engine 83 was the busiest fire company in the U.S. during the 1970s and early 1980s. This corner today looks much as it did then. The same steak house is even there. A reader recently wrote me about how he bought his first meal in Chicago there after arriving in Uptown from Arkansas in the mid-1970s with only $9 dollars in his pocket.
