This woman lived on Winthrop near Ainslie. She stood out because she was so dressed up compared to most in the neighborhood. When I asked her what the occasion was, she told me that she had just gotten her first paycheck from her first job and proudly held up this dollar bill – the first dollar she had ever earned. She and her friends were going out to celebrate that night. I remember this rite of passage in my own life and my children’s. It’s a significant milestone in every teenager’s pathway to independence.
