On September 5, 1974, I walked north on Winthrop from Wilson, photographing a number Latin Kings along the way. I was almost to Berwyn, when I saw a young boy holding a puppy outside his apartment building. I think it was 5309 North Winthrop. As soon as I started photographing him, this girl asked to be photographed with the puppy, too. The boy was kind enough to hand him to her. The puppy immediately started licking the girl’s ear. Many Uptown and Edgewater kids had dogs during this era. The contented look of this girl with puppy speaks volumes about the unconditional love that dogs provided and that kids needed.
