I caught this unusual shot of a great blue heron taking to wing on 12/31/14 at Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge in Texas on the east side of Galveston Bay. Enlargement will show the birds feet lifting out of the water behind the reeds. It was an exceptionally cold and windy day for this area with temperatures hovering just above freezing and the wind coming out of the north (the direction the bird is headed). Taken from my vehicle with the lens resting on a beanback draped over the window. The camera was a Nikon D4S with 800mm lens and 1.2x teleconverter.
