I took this shot at sunrise on 12/31/14 at Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge just east of Galveston Bay in Texas. There was a gusty north wind blowing and the temperature was hovering just above freezing. Normally, great blue herons won’t let you get very close. They are somewhat skittish. However, in these conditions, the bird was hunkered down. Taken with a Nikon D4S and 800mm Nikkor at f5.6, handheld.
