This gypsy lady invited me into her apartment to photograph her with her son. It was one of the more bizarre photos in the bizarre Uptown series … for obvious reasons. Note the bowling statue next to the gargoyle, religious icons and baby bottle on the mantle above a fireplace which held a wood burning stove. I will never forget the mother’s dress, the wallpaper and curtains. It’s hard to imagine patterns and colors clashing more than they did. Absolutely nothing in this scene made sense which made it exemplify the neighborhood and its inhabitants.
