I call this image “Haves and Have Nots.” On Christmas Eve in 1975, I photographed this line of people in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood. They were lined up hoping to get food at the Salvation Army kitchen on Wilson Avenue. I had taken several shots of the line when this woman suddenly and brusquely burst through it. She didn’t appear happy to be sharing the sidewalk. Note the reaction from the woman in the sunglasses. The two expressions speak of the divide between haves and have nots in this place at this time.
