Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood in the mid-1970s was truly a racial melting pot. Many other Chicago neighborhoods were dominated by a single ethnic group; Uptown had more diversity than the United Nations. This quiet Hispanic man seemed to be a gentle soul. He spoke little or no English and signed my model release form with an X. Someone wrote recently to say that Uptown is still exceptionally diverse. Senn High School is reportedly the most diverse high school in the state of Illinois. Students from more than 65 different nationalities go there.
