This man had a thriving sidewalk (or maybe it was a back alley) business in hubcaps. I’m not sure how his supply chain worked, but given all the poverty in Uptown, I suspect there was no shortage of people willing to sell him “recycled” hubcaps. A footnote to this story: some people used to chain the hoods of their cars down to keep their batteries from being stolen. Luckily, Chicago has a great public transit system.
