In Uptown during the mid-1970s, it was hard for a boy to grow up without learning how to fight. A guy just had to be prepared. These two were actually brothers. They’re pretending to fight for the camera, not fighting for real. The larger boy who is doing the karate kick was quite agile. Even though I was twice his size, I wouldn’t have wanted to meet him in an alley. That was the purpose of all the posturing. Note the ribbon bows decorating the wall and the Christmas lights around the mirror. This shot was taken the week before Christmas in 1975.
