When I shot this image in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood in the mid-1970s, kung fu movies were the rage on television. In many of the pictures I took, young boys (but never girls), would strike martial arts poses. This kid took it to a new level … literally. He struck the pose while jumping out of the second story window of an abandoned apartment building. He jumped repeatedly to make sure I got a good shot. Or did he do it to impress his young girlfriend? Maybe it was both. Note the boarded up windows on the building in the background.
