This image was taken early in the morning on 10/22/1975. I had just gotten off the El at Wilson to begin my day of photography, when this land yacht sailed around the corner. Look at the length of that vehicle! You heard the term “land yacht” frequently in the mid-1970s. After the OPEC oil embargo in October, 1973, gasoline prices quadrupled in 1974, making big gas guzzlers like this vehicle the object of jokes. The scene doesn’t look much different today with the exception of some additional rust on the El and some smaller cars in the foreground. The convenience store on the right is gone, too.
