I photographed this last minute Christmas shopper on the corner of Wilson and Broadway in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood on Christmas Eve of 1974. She described herself to me as a recovering addict. She was going into the Walgreen’s that used to be on the northeast corner of that intersection to do some last minute Christmas shopping. The coy look belied her insecurity. She was nervous about how her family would receive her at Christmas. She was trying to rebuild bridges to them. After I took this shot, she went into the store, but not before dropping some change in the bucket of the Salvation Army bellringer that was standing on the corner.
