This close up of a Latin King Sweater Patch was taken in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood during the mid-1970s. The Latin King gang sweaters were quite well made. Their patches were very elaborate. Beneath the emblem was the gang’s slogan and the individual’s gang name, i.e., Professor. The slogan, “Don’t be jive and stay alive,” spoke to the member’s struggle for survival on the poverty-ridden streets of Uptown during that era.
