This 1974 mural on North Winthrop in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood surprised me. I thought the gangs were rivals, but here they seemed to be cooperating. During the years I photographed in Uptown, I saw other examples that indicated the gangs co-existed, such as two brothers who were members of the different gangs and a softball team called the Unknowns that had members from both gangs. The mural in this image shows a smiling being gently separating the two gangs.
