Even today, cars and driving are a right of passage for young people. In Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood during the 1970s, poverty delayed that right of passage for many. Here, a young Latino leans against his car, showing it off. I was struck by how immobile his face was. He stood rigidly and his face didn’t move from one frame to the next.
