This man may have been legless, but he wasn’t heartless. It took courage to navigate the streets of Uptown in the mid-1970s. This was taken two decades before the Americans with Disabilities Act made it mandatory for cities and businesses to provide access to people such as this man. This shot was taken in 1974 at 5009 North Sheridan Road, just north of Argyle, looking north. The giant apartment building at that location (Somerset Place) had vacant street level shops then and still does today. Compare my shot with Google Maps street with today. Somerset Place, a nursing home that housed felons and mentally ill patients with elderly patients was closed in 2010 for various violations, but a plan to redevelop it was approved by neighbors in January of 2013 and then by the City.
