There’s something spooky about the look of egret chicks; they have the look of evil in their eyes.  You can see the predator – unmasked by the calm beauty and grace that cloak them later in life. At this age (3-4 weeks), you see their naked aggression and selfish malevolence in their hungry eyes.

Taken with a Nikon D4S, 800mm Nikkor and 2x teleconverter at the Audubon Society’s Smith Oaks Rookery in High Island, Texas. The birds were an estimated 70 meters away, sweltering in the mid-day heat – a fact that, no doubt, affected their temperament.
