This shot of a male great egret was taken with the Nikon D5 and 800 mm Nikkor f5.6 lens in the Smith Oaks Audubon Sancturary at High Island, Texas. I used aperture priority mode at f5.6. This automatically forces the shutter speed to the highest possible setting for any given lighting conditions. I also let the ISO float up to about 2500. That means I can shoot at 1/8000th of a second from sun-up to sundown. And thanks to the exceptional ISO capabilities of the D5, the images are noise free.
