Weary and thin from his migration across the Gulf of Mexico, this male rose breasted grosbeak was recuperating when I found him at High Island, Texas. It can take birds like this two to three days of non-stop flying to cross the Gulf … without food or water. He sat in this foliage, eating and trying to regain his strength for approximately an hour without moving much. Taken with a Nikon D4 and 800mm Nikkor with 1.2x teleconverter on 4/17/14 at the Audubon Society’s Smith Oaks Rookery.
