I call this photograph “The Missing Block.” Since I photographed this painter near the corner of Wilson and Kenmore in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood in the mid-1970s, the block behind him was completely demolished. Only a McDonalds at the end of the block that was not there when I took this shot and a parking lot are there today. Gone are Zorba’s Lounge and Restaurant, the Luneta Barber shop, the Uptown Pawn Shop, the currency exchange and several other business establishments.
