This family had a great sense of humor. I caught them at the curb on their way into their apartment building. When I asked to take their photo, the woman lit up like she was on the cover of Glamour and the boy puffed himself up like Arnold Schwarzenegger, pretending he was Mister Uptown. I loved photographing the free-spirited people of Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood in the mid-1970s. They not only had character, they were characters. Arnold’s film career was just starting about this time, but he was already well known in competitive body-building circles. Contests like Mr. America and Mr. Universe were televised along with beauty pageants like Miss America and Miss Universe.
