I took this shot of a Chicago Uptown mother and daughter in 1976 in their apartment on Winthrop. The woman had several other children that I photographed separately. I never could coordinate the whole group. There’s an old saying in Hollywood among directors, “never work with children or animals.” They always want to go their own way and do their own thing. In fact, to get this shot, the woman had to hang on tight to the girl. You can sense the frustration in the mother’s face.
